More than 60 charities urged ministers to introduce a clean air act before the king’s speech. The proposal would ban wood burning, remove clear diesel vehicles from roads, and require councils to cut pollution. Dirty air was described as the biggest environmental health risk, costing about £27bn a year and linked to asthma, wheezing, cancer, and dementia, with harm to the economy. Leading medical expert Stephen Holgate said enforcement over wood burning is inadequate, citing thousands of complaints with very few fines. Current regulations were said to date from when coal was the main source of pollution, while wood-burning particles were described as at least as toxic as coal emissions. The call also included phasing out wood-burning stoves and supporting rural households to switch to cleaner heating such as heat pumps.
