Judge says he'll approve opioid settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue and Sackler family
""conjure up $40 trillion or $100 trillion to compensate those who have suffered unfathomable loss.""
""The plan is entirely lawful, does the greatest good for the greatest number in the shortest available timeframe.""
A federal bankruptcy court approved Purdue Pharma's deal to resolve thousands of lawsuits over opioids. The agreement requires Sackler family members to contribute up to $7 billion over 15 years and replaces a plan the U.S. Supreme Court rejected for improperly shielding family members from future lawsuits. The settlement includes payments to thousands of victims and ranks among the largest opioid settlements obtained by governments and localities. The resolution could largely end prolonged legal efforts against Purdue after six years of bankruptcy proceedings that involved cities, states, counties, tribes, and individuals affected by the opioid crisis.
