Judge says he'll approve opioid settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue and Sackler family
"conjure up $40 trillion or $100 trillion to compensate those who have suffered unfathomable loss."
"The plan is entirely lawful, does the greatest good for the greatest number in the shortest available timeframe."
A federal bankruptcy judge will approve Purdue Pharma's revised settlement requiring Sackler family members to contribute up to $7 billion and give up company ownership. The agreement replaces a prior deal rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court for improperly shielding family members from future lawsuits. The settlement is part of about $50 billion in opioid resolutions and could conclude extensive litigation connected to an opioid crisis linked to roughly 900,000 U.S. deaths since 1999. Purdue filed for bankruptcy six years ago amid nearly unanimous support from many plaintiffs and diminished opposition compared with earlier phases.
