Illegal skin lightening cream being sold in UK butchers, watchdog warns
"As a black woman and a long-standing advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion, I want to be absolutely clear: the sale of illegal skin lightening products is not only dangerous, it is unlawful,"
"I definitely saw a difference in my skin complexion and felt like I needed to keep up with it, because if I stopped, I would revert back to my original skin complexion,"
Illegal skin lightening products containing banned ingredients such as hydroquinone, mercury and powerful corticosteroids are being sold in a widening range of UK outlets, including butchers, specialist food shops and online. These ingredients increase risks of skin damage, infections and pregnancy-related complications and are therefore illegal. Users are often driven by complex social and personal factors, including colourism that favours lighter skin. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute urges the public to avoid these creams and to report sellers. One teenager used an unlabelled hydroquinone-containing cream for months and developed daily reliance after seeing skin lightening.
