Huge Study Finds Living Near Nuclear Plants Linked With Cancer Deaths

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers analyzed nearly two decades of data and discovered an association between nuclear power plant proximity and elevated cancer mortality rates. The study examined national-scale data from 2000 to 2018, using CDC cancer mortality statistics and US Energy Information Administration nuclear facility data. Communities closer to nuclear plants showed higher cancer death rates, with risk correlating to distance. While the findings do not definitively prove causation and have limitations including lack of direct radiation measurements, researchers consider the association significant enough to warrant further investigation, particularly as nuclear power is promoted as a climate change solution.
