Health secretary and BMA to meet in bid to avoid strikes
Briefly

In an effort to prevent strike action by resident doctors in England's NHS, talks are scheduled between Health Secretary Wes Streeting and the British Medical Association (BMA). The BMA announced that resident doctors will strike for five days starting July 25 over a dispute concerning inadequate pay. Despite a 5.4% pay rise this year, doctors argue their pay is still 20% lower than in 2008 and demand a clear path to restoring it. Streeting maintains he cannot raise the salary offer further, indicating sympathy towards better working conditions instead.
BMA resident doctor committee co-chairs Dr. Melissa Ryan and Dr. Ross Nieuwoudt stated they had been left with "no choice" but to strike without a "credible offer to keep us on the path to restore our pay."
Health Secretary Wes Streeting called the strike "unnecessary and unreasonable," emphasizing that "the NHS is hanging by a thread - why on earth are they threatening to pull it?"
