Have you had a hard talk with an older driver? Tell us about it
"As the number of older drivers on the road increases, so do concerns about their ability to drive safely. But at the same time, many Americans over 65 depend on driving for mobility and independence."
"What have you done when facing the difficult situation of an aging parent or relative with diminishing driving skills? NPR wants to hear your story. Please fill out the form below to help inform our coverage on the radio and online."
An increasing population of older drivers raises concerns about driving safety as age-related decline affects skills. Many Americans aged 65 and older depend on driving for mobility and independence, making license limitations or revocations disruptive. Families often face difficult conversations and decisions when a parent or relative shows diminishing driving abilities, balancing safety with autonomy. Personal responses can include monitoring, arranging alternative transportation, obtaining medical assessments or driving evaluations, staged transitions, and legal or administrative steps. A form is available to collect personal accounts to inform radio and online coverage and to illustrate emotional, logistical, and policy challenges.
