
Antonia S. began smoking at 18 and switched to vaping six years later, preferring watermelon flavor. A 10-milliliter e-liquid bottle, roughly equivalent to about 60 e-cigarettes, lasts her a week. She reports vaping made her healthier but also increased dependence compared with smoking. She vapes at home because it does not smell like cigarettes and uses flavors such as blueberry, cola, and apple peach. Germany’s youth smoking is rising: nearly 10% of 12- to 17-year-olds smoked in 2025 versus about 6% four years earlier. Regular vape use is almost 7%, more than double the 2021 level, prompting concern from Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck.
