Dr. Demetre Daskalakis has been appointed Chief Medical Officer at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in New York City. He began his clinical career doing HIV care as an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital, then served as deputy commissioner at the NYC Department of Health before joining the CDC. He led the Biden administration's mpox outbreak response in 2022, using education, outreach, and vaccination guided by data. He publicly resigned from a CDC leadership position in August and said Washington currently limits federal public health's ability to execute its mission, prompting a return to local practice.
