Fury at plans for parking charges at historic hall and park
Briefly

Enfield Council plans to introduce parking charges at Forty Hall Estate to improve traffic management and environmental sustainability. Proposed rates range from £2 for up to one hour to £10 for over four hours, applicable from 9am to 8pm daily. Free parking remains for less than 30 minutes. Concerns were raised by Dr Martin Dearne about the impact on volunteer archaeological research due to increased costs. Critics, including Conservative councillor Edward Smith, claim the charges will deter visitors and create hardships for local users. The council intends to fund infrastructure and heritage preservation through this initiative.
The proposed parking rates range from £2 for up to one hour to £10 for over four hours, applying from 9am until 8pm daily.
Dr Martin Dearne warned that the charges could mean the end of a 20-year research programme, making it financially impossible for volunteers to continue.
Cllr Edward Smith described the council's plans as misguided, stating that they would seriously inconvenience various users of the estate.
The council hopes to implement the parking charges this autumn to fund infrastructure, heritage preservation, and enhance the visitor experience.
