Former motel in Mountain View becomes lifeline for residents in need of housing
Briefly

Heartwood Apartments in Mountain View opened in October 2024 as part of Project Homekey, offering permanent housing to individuals experiencing homelessness. The complex, previously the Crestview Hotel, features a range of units for various residents, including transitional-age youth. Many residents, like Ruben Gonzalez, have reported life-changing benefits from stable housing, which has facilitated health care access and new job opportunities. The supportive environment aims to assist those overcoming issues such as substance abuse, providing a foundation for recovery and personal growth.
Heartwood Apartments, which opened in October 2024, is part of Project Homekey - a state initiative that provides funds to organizations or entities that allow them to purchase and transform properties into permanent or temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness.
For Ruben Gonzalez, access to housing has been a turning point. He said he was proud his father was able to visit his new apartment last October before passing away two months later.
The development includes 34 studio units, four one-bedrooms, 10 two-bedrooms and one three-bedroom unit, accommodating previously homeless individuals and families concerned with chronic homelessness.
A stable living environment has enabled several residents to manage severe health issues, explore new job opportunities, or maintain stability in their lives.
