Recent measles outbreaks in New Mexico and Texas have drawn attention to U.S. public health challenges, particularly with the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Experts like Dr. Mike Osterholm, a veteran in the field, warn that Kennedy's leadership may have immediate negative effects, such as suspensions of critical advisory meetings by health agencies. This pause could disrupt vaccine recommendations and hinder responses to potential public health crises, raising the alarm among health officials as they reflect on the ongoing consequences of weakened public health structures post-COVID.
"One of the immediate actions taken under Secretary Kennedy's leadership was the suspension of critical vaccine advisory meetings," Osterholm said.
"I don't see any reason why we would need to have a total pause in the sharing of information," he pointed out.
