Family of California cop who died in jail parking lot after DUI arrest files lawsuit
Briefly

Lawrence David Orso, a veteran officer, died after being released from jail following a DUI arrest. Despite having severe medical conditions and being monitored with an EKG device, he received no appropriate medical care at the Southwest Detention Center. He experienced distress shortly after his release and collapsed outside the jail, remaining unnoticed for 40 minutes. The family is suing Riverside County for wrongful death, claiming the circumstances of his release demonstrated a reckless disregard for his health and safety.
Lawrence David Orso, 46, of Murrieta had a blood alcohol level of 0.23% nearly three times the legal limit for driving when he was arrested.
Despite clear evidence of his serious medical condition, SWDC staff failed to take any appropriate steps to assess or provide the necessary medical care.
Just six minutes after he was released from jail, Orso began experiencing distress and collapsed in the parking lot, going unnoticed for approximately 40 minutes.
The lawsuit alleges that the premature and medically unsafe release constituted a reckless disregard for Mr. Orso's health and safety.
