Families 'failed' by trust meet ahead of inquiry
"uncover failures in care and look at the concerning number of patient deaths by suicide at the trust over the past 10 years"
"remarkable courage and tireless campaigning while they were suffering unimaginable grief"
"does not go away, but they want this inquiry to make permanent and radical change"
"When I think of the rest of my life, my wedding day and having children I think about these scars."
A 2022 investigation found major failings in care given to three teenagers at West Lane Hospital prior to their deaths. The Health Secretary announced a public inquiry to uncover those failings and examine a concerning number of patient suicides at the trust over the past ten years. Families of Christie Harnett, Nadia Sharif and Emily Moore led the campaign after the three young people took their own lives within months of each other. Around 50 families and former patients will meet to identify issues and seek answers. Former patients describe the unit as chaotic and unsafe and report worsened mental health and increased self-harm; families demand permanent, radical change.
