Expectant mothers with high risk pregnancies to have care moved from Portiuncula Hospital amid care reviews
Briefly

The HSE NorthWest published five reviews highlighting critical issues in maternity care at Portiuncula University Hospital. Women with gestational diabetes and high-risk conditions will now give birth at different facilities. Common themes identified included concerns over communication, governance, clinical care, and leadership. A previous review in 2018 raised similar issues related to consultant presence and reliance on locum staff. An external team is working on implementing improvements by addressing identified recommendations for better patient care and governance.
A spokesperson said the Women's and Children's Network, HSE West and North West will now offer to meet individually with the families to discuss the findings, answer any questions and lay out next steps.
The review team laid out four common themes of concern: communication; governance; clinical care; leadership and infrastructure.
A previous review of maternity care in the hospital took place in 2018 (Walker Report 2018) which highlighted similar concerns around governance, training and consultant presence.
We are committed to implementing the 34 recommendations contained in these five reviews.
