Over the period, gardaí carried out more than 2,021 checkpoints between mandatory intoxicant testing and regular, high-visibility checkpoints. 170 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More than 650 vehicles were seized by gardaí for a range offences under the Road Traffic Act, 1961."
A national road safety campaign runs from December 1 to January 5 targeting safer driving over the Christmas period. High recorded speeds included 192kmh in a 100kmh zone and 144kmh in an 80kmh zone. The week saw six deaths and 13 serious collisions. Officers carried out over 2,021 checkpoints, arrested 170 people for driving under the influence, seized more than 650 vehicles, and issued hundreds of fixed charge notices for mobile phone and seat belt offences. A 24-hour national slowdown day runs December 23.
