Dangerous mosquitoes that like warm temperatures found in East Bay
"The Aedes aegypti mosquitoes - known for spreading diseases like yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika worldwide - turned up in Antioch this week. This species of mosquito has already expanded to at least 27 counties across California over the past decade, and the warming climate may make it easier for them to spread and transmit diseases. The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District warned residents that they had collected more Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in their traps this week."
""We need residents to be aware that this week's rain can provide mosquitoes with more places to develop from egg to adult," said Steve Schutz, the scientific programs manager for the district, in a statement on Thursday. "So it's imperative that residents dump out any rainwater that has collected in their yards." The vector control district shared that it may spray larvicides, a type of insecticide used to kill mosquito larvae before they grow into adults, next week."
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, capable of transmitting diseases such as yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika, were detected in Antioch, Contra Costa County. The species has spread to at least 27 California counties over the past decade, and warming conditions may facilitate further expansion and transmission. The insects first appeared in Martinez in 2022 and have been found multiple times in Antioch, including recent trap collections. Rain increases available breeding sites, so residents are urged to dump standing water weekly and use insect repellent. The district may apply larvicides next week and offers services to residents who continue to see mosquitoes at 925-685-9301.
