Organised crime gangs are producing counterfeit branded weight-loss injections designed to mimic legitimate medicines but are unlicensed and potentially deadly. Popular treatments such as Wegovy and Mounjaro have supported weight loss for more than 1.5 million people in the UK, with around 4% of households using them. The MHRA carried out a major seizure, confiscating tens of thousands of empty pens, raw chemical ingredients and over 2,000 unlicensed retatrutide and tirzepatide pens ready for dispatch. The estimated street value of finished products exceeds £250,000. The MHRA warns that prescription medicines should only be obtained from registered pharmacies with a healthcare professional's prescription because sourcing medicines otherwise carries serious health risks and unknown contents.
