Controversial monkey lab closes at UMass Amherst
Briefly

UMass Amherst announced the closure of its controversial monkey testing lab due to federal funding cuts. The Lacreuse Lab was studying marmosets as models for aging, Alzheimer's disease, and women's health. Dr. Agnes Lacreuse stated that reducing research funding undermines support for nonhuman primate research. PETA had advocated for the lab's closure, alleging animal cruelty practices. The lab's research on marmosets, including experiments related to menopause, faced criticism from PETA, which stated their efforts successfully ended animal testing at the facility.
Current efforts to destroy science and slash research funding undermine my ability to provide continued support for nonhuman primate research at UMass. As we are completing a large study to help women with breast cancer live a better life, I have taken the decision to no longer seek funding to support a marmoset colony at UMass.
We were determined to close this laboratory and end the torture of these tiny monkeys and we did. Lacreuse's reign of terror is over.
