A Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) pilot at the Royal London Hospital ran from September 2025 to January, offering an alternative to A&E for sickle cell crises. The pilot provided rapid, specialist-led treatment for severe pain episodes commonly experienced by people with sickle cell disease. Campaigners and patients reported strong support and disappointment at the pilot ending, citing improved care and outcomes. Barts Health NHS Trust said patients will continue to receive specialist-led care at the Haematology Day Unit but will otherwise need to use A&E for emergency care. Calls were made for a national specialised sickle cell strategy.
