Classes canceled at Riordan High in S.F. amid tuberculosis outbreak
"We have followed all SFDPH guidelines from the first day that we became aware of the TB situation,"
"Tuberculosis is a serious but treatable disease, and in consultation with public health experts, we do not believe a full school closure is either necessary or in the best interest of our students,"
"At the same time, we believe it is prudent to provide additional flexibility during this phase of testing."
"coordinated screening and contact tracing effort."
Archbishop Riordan High School ordered all students and staff to stay home and shifted classes online after the San Francisco Department of Public Health confirmed three active tuberculosis cases at the school since November. Videos and emails instructed students and families to complete testing and await results before returning. The school held a sold-out basketball game against St. Ignatius two days earlier while testing had already begun. School leadership said it followed SFDPH guidelines, described tuberculosis as serious but treatable, and preferred targeted testing over a full closure while offering flexibility. The health department required testing as part of a coordinated screening and contact tracing effort and issued an advisory; classes were cancelled Friday.
