Current cigarette smoking among U.S. adults reached 9% in 2025, with 1 in 11 adults reporting they smoke. CDC preliminary findings used survey responses from more than 24,200 adults. Current smoking was defined as having smoked at least 100 cigarettes in a lifetime and smoking every day or some days. In the mid-1960s, 42% of adults were smokers, and the rate has declined due to cigarette taxes, price increases, smoking bans, public education, and reduced social acceptability. Electronic cigarette use among adults has stayed about steady in 2025 at about 7%.
