A report indicated significant financial struggles among families, with 28% of parents lacking enough food for their children. Additionally, 18% cut back on heating and 17% on electricity. Many parents faced arrears on energy bills, while 40% skipped meals to ensure their children were fed. Over half reduced social activities, and about 42% cut back on clothing. Reports from parents highlighted the impact of financial difficulties on their children’s mental health and the necessity of visiting food banks.
More than a quarter (28pc) of those surveyed felt at some point they did not have enough food to feed their children.
One-fifth of people with children said they had to cut back or go without food.
Barnardos CEO Suzanne Connolly said: "The statistics in this report show that parents and children across the country are still going without or having to cut back on basic essentials."
"We've had to downsize cars, insurance, get rid of medical insurance, visit food banks and stop afterschool activities."
