Alarm as CDC calls for separate MMR vaccines despite measles outbreak
"The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is undergoing more scrutiny by the Trump administration in their ongoing reassessment of vaccines despite the worst measles outbreak in decades. Jim O'Neill, the deputy secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the acting director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), called on Monday for new vaccines to replace the current MMR shots."
"Many of the vaccines in the routine childhood immunization schedule are combined in order to reduce the number of shots children receive, and their safety and efficacy have been demonstrated by decades of research. Breaking up the vaccines would be a remarkably complicated, time-consuming, costly, but more importantly unnecessary action, said Jason Schwartz, an associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health."
The Trump administration has increased scrutiny of the MMR vaccine amid a major measles outbreak. Jim O'Neill, HHS deputy secretary and acting CDC director, called for development of safe monovalent vaccines to replace the combined MMR and for splitting the MMR into three separate shots. He referenced a post urging avoidance of Tylenol and mixed vaccines and delaying hepatitis B vaccination until age 12. Public health experts emphasize that combined vaccines reduce the number of injections, have demonstrated safety and efficacy, and warn that breaking up MMR would be complicated, costly, require more visits, and likely reduce series completion.
