7-OH, an Opioid Hiding in Plain Sight, Causes Overdose
"In addition to providing an overview here, on the Dr. Suzette Glasner Podcast we discuss what you need to know about the quietly growing trend around 7-OH. 7-hydorxyitragynine, or 7-OH, is a compound that is up to 13 times more potent than morphine, making it highly addictive. Recently, this addictive compound has been marketed as an herbal remedy for sleep, pain, and anxiety, and because it is unregulated, it has been made accessible at gas stations, convenience stores, and smoke shops."
"7-OH is found in kratom leaves. Kratom is an herbal extract from the leaves of an evergreen tree found in tropical countries. Its leaves have been used as a substitute for opium in the treatment of pain, as it acts on the brain's opioid receptors. Some people with opioid addiction use kratom to help wean or detox themselves off other opioids, such as heroin or prescription pain medicines. However, repeated use of kratom can lead to dependency and the need for kratom addiction treatment."
7-hydorxyitragynine (7-OH) is an opioid compound up to 13 times more potent than morphine and highly addictive. Small natural amounts occur in kratom leaves, an herbal extract sometimes used for pain relief and to self-manage opioid withdrawal. Synthetic, concentrated 7-OH products have been introduced as unregulated supplements marketed for sleep, pain, and anxiety, and sold at gas stations, convenience stores, and smoke shops. These concentrated products significantly increase risks of dependency and overdose and have been linked to overdose deaths among otherwise healthy adults. The FDA has issued warnings about the dangers of 7-OH-containing supplements.
