The borough implemented an AI-based Hotspotting the Overdose Epidemic program that produced a 77% drop in fatal overdoses among active participants for the 12 months ending April 2024. The Staten Island Fentanyl and Overdose Task Force was founded in 2023 by District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and Borough President Vito Fossella to focus on prevention, treatment, and law enforcement accountability for dealers. Deadly drug mashups continue to pose a threat despite overall declines.
