Sensible shopping can help better individuals' well-being and the environment, as well as the well-being of those working in manufacturing. With 2026 upon us, I thought it would be beneficial for me, as a consumer psychologist, to offer you five suggestions on how consumers can improve their situation or that of others in the upcoming year."
"Avoid spending money you don't have. Using credit cards or other types of purchase-related borrowing can lead to increased stress levels for the buyer. Thus, trying to buy things you can afford is better for your well-being. If you want something you can't currently afford, try saving up for it. This can also make you feel satisfied when you are rewarded for the effort you've put in."
The start of a new year is an opportunity to develop sensible shopping habits that benefit personal well-being, workers, and the environment. Sensible shopping reduces financial stress by avoiding purchases beyond one’s means and encourages saving to increase satisfaction from earned purchases. Buying locally and patronizing independent shops fosters social interaction and reduces environmental impacts from long-distance transport. Avoiding extremely cheap goods helps prevent supporting unfair labor practices and underpaid workers. Prioritizing quality and paying fair prices supports workers’ livelihoods and leads to longer-lasting products, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
