The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is soliciting proposals for a new facial recognition system aimed at capturing images of every occupant in vehicles crossing the border. Already utilizing facial recognition at ports of entry, CBP aims to enhance this technology to include back-seat passengers. The agency's past tests highlighted challenges, such as capturing images of all passengers due to vehicle design and environmental factors. To address these hurdles, CBP requests a private vendor's assistance in developing a more effective tool for complete passenger identification.
"CBP's facial recognition tool is currently operating in the air, sea, and land pedestrian environments. The agency's goal is to bring it to the land vehicle environment."
"Human behavior, multiple passenger vehicle rows, and environmental obstacles all present challenges unique to the vehicle environment," the document says.
"The RIF says that these tests demonstrate that while this facial recognition tool has 'improved,' it isn't always able to get photos of every vehicle passenger."
"The agency is currently 'testing' how to bring its existing facial recognition technology to the land vehicle environment, seeking a private vendor to enhance image capture for border crossings."
