Tinder will require new users in the US to verify their identity with a selfie | TechCrunch
"The facial verification feature, known as Face Check, requires new users to verify their identity by submitting a short video selfie. This initiative aims to reduce impersonation on the platform and ensure that people are not connected to bots or fake accounts. Face Check creates a 3D video scan of the user's face to verify its similarity with their profile pictures."
"Tinder says that the video selfies are deleted shortly after review, but that it keeps a "non-reversible, encrypted face map and face vector," which help verify new photos, spot fraud, and stop people from making duplicate accounts. The Face Check feature has already been in place in California since June, as well as in Colombia and Canada. It's also now available in Australia, India, and other countries across Southeast Asia."
"Since launching the feature, Tinder claims to have already seen promising results, including a 60% reduction in the exposure to potential "bad actors" and a 40% decline in the number of "bad actor reports." Face Check will roll out to additional U.S. states in the coming months. It will also roll out to other dating apps owned by parent company Match Group in 2026."
Tinder is expanding Face Check in the U.S. to verify new users through short video selfies that produce a 3D scan and compare it to profile photos. Video selfies are deleted shortly after review while Tinder retains a non-reversible, encrypted face map and face vector to verify new photos, detect fraud, and prevent duplicate accounts. Face Check has been available in several regions and will expand to more U.S. states and to other Match Group apps in 2026. Tinder reports a 60% reduction in exposure to potential bad actors and a 40% decline in bad actor reports amid challenges with user departures and revenue.
