The Environmental Working Group (EWG) report scrutinizes over 2,000 SPF products in the US, revealing that nearly 80% do not meet safety and effectiveness criteria. While sunscreen is crucial for skin protection, aerosol spray options may pose inhalation risks due to potentially harmful particles. The presence of benzene, a carcinogenic chemical found in some products, raises further alarm about health hazards. Moreover, undisclosed fragrances in sunscreens leave consumers uninformed about their ingredients, highlighting the need for awareness and caution when choosing sun protection products.
"Wearing any sunscreen is much more important and offers better sun protection for your skin than not applying anything. But not all sunscreens are created equal," said Dr. David Andrews.
The EWG report raised concerns about inhaling tiny particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide found in spray sunscreens, which can pose respiratory risks.
The report also alarmed consumers about undisclosed fragrances in sunscreens, which leave users in the dark about what they're applying to their skin.
Short-term exposure to benzene can cause dizziness and unconsciousness, while long-term exposure could lead to severe health issues, including cancer.
