"It was the most humiliating moment of my life, being escorted out the place I have shopped in for 10 years in front of my community."
"no incidents or alerts associated with Rajah and that the incident was a case of human error."
"We have been in contact with Mr Rajah to sincerely apologise for his experience in our Elephant and Castle store, a spokesperson said. This was not an issue with the facial recognition technology in use but a case of the wrong person being approached in store."
A shopper, Warren Rajah, was approached by staff at the Elephant and Castle Sainsbury's, instructed to leave his shopping and escorted out after staff cited facial recognition technology. Staff reportedly pointed to a sign about the newly introduced Facewatch system when asked for a reason. Rajah described the experience as the most humiliating moment of his life. Facewatch later said there were no incidents or alerts associated with Rajah and characterised the episode as human error. Sainsbury's apologised, offered a £75 gift voucher and said the wrong person had been approached rather than a technology fault. The retailer has trialled the system in several London stores and plans wider rollout.
