License plate reader cameras in Brookline? Readers say it's a bad idea.
"Serious, intrusive violation of privacy. Tracking of my movements is illegal surveillance."
"small-time theft does not require surveillance state tactics. Hire some security guards!"
"The agencies that use our technologies own and control all data collected through their Flock hardware, period, full stop,"
"Neither Flock nor anyone else is 'collecting data on everyone's movements,' as the ACLU alleges."
Chestnut Hill Realty planned to install electronic license plate readers along Independence Drive to deter package and retail theft and asked if local police would want access to the data. A public survey of 298 respondents found 66% opposed the plan, citing privacy concerns and doubts about crime prevention, while 32% supported it as a deterrent and investigative tool. Residents described the cameras as invasive or as protective depending on perspective. The ACLU warned the technology enables broad government tracking. Flock Safety said agencies control the data. The Brookline Select Board voted on Oct. 28 to pause the agreement.
