In Sao Paulo, Big Brother' is watching, with 25,000 cameras and facial recognition technology
Briefly

In Sao Paulo, Brazil, a fugitive rapist named Germano Euclides Paciencia was captured using the city's advanced surveillance system, Smart Sampa. The system employs artificial intelligence to identify criminals among the city's large population of 12 million. Implemented recently, Smart Sampa has led to the arrest of 1,044 fugitives and the resolution of 60 missing persons cases, all noted for being accomplished without violence or errors. This initiative is a major focus of Mayor Ricardo Nunes, aiming to improve public safety in the city through technology.
"We have arrested 1,044 fugitives, including murderers and rapists, without firing a single shot and without a single mistake," Mayor Ricardo Nunes stated, highlighting the success of Smart Sampa.
"The camera scanned the faces of passersby, and by using an artificial intelligence engine, instantly compared those images with a database of fugitives—thus leading to Paciencia's capture," explained the city's technological approach.
