Google confirmed the data deletion was due to a technical error, affecting users without cloud backups. Those with encrypted backups can restore their information, but others face irreversible loss. Users have been advised to check their backup settings via the app. Last summer, Google had transitioned to on-device storage for privacy but this incident revealed the risks associated with such a change, highlighting concerns about data accessibility and recovery.
We briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people. Nearly everyone with encrypted Timeline backups will be able to restore their data.
To see if it's on for you, tap your user icon in the iOS or Android Google Maps app, then 'Your timeline,' and look for a cloud icon.
