"the use of facial recognition proposed by the council amounted to "an unprecedented level of mass surveillance and it marks the end of privacy in the public space as we know it""
"match faces against a defined police database in real time"
"Importantly, this will enable Retrospective Facial Recognition (RFR) across H&F's camera network, allowing CCTV footage to be automatically searched to efficiently track the routes taken by criminals across the borough."
"enable more efficient video playback, automatic vehicle tracking and enable use of other tools that will make more effective use of the camera system"
Hammersmith and Fulham Council's cabinet approved over £3m to enhance the borough's CCTV network. The borough already operates more than 2,000 cameras and has the highest cameras-per-person ratio in the UK. Plans include installing live facial recognition cameras at crime hotspots to match faces against a defined police database in real time, with two cameras proposed at ten locations including outside Shepherd's Bush Market and on Wood Lane outside Westfield. Facial recognition rollout is contingent on police support. AI features for 500 cameras will enable efficient video playback, automatic vehicle tracking and retrospective facial recognition to trace routes taken by criminals. Campaign group Big Brother Watch criticised the proposals as unprecedented mass surveillance. The Metropolitan Police currently runs a pilot for static live facial recognition in Croydon.
