Security researchers from Bitsight have accessed the live feeds of 40,000 internet-connected cameras globally, raising serious security concerns highlighted by the DHS. The US, with 14,000 feeds, is significantly affected, involving sensitive locations like datacenters and healthcare facilities. These exposed feeds can inform espionage tactics, mapping vulnerabilities, and provide insights useful for petty crimes, as well as raise privacy issues. Bitsight warns that accessing these cameras often requires merely a web browser, illustrating the alarming ease of such breaches.
It should be obvious to everyone that leaving a camera exposed on the internet is a bad idea, and yet thousands of them are still accessible.
Some don't even require sophisticated hacking techniques or special tools to access their live footage in unintended ways.
