The Wikimedia Foundation is legally contesting the UK’s new Online Safety Act, arguing it could jeopardize the safety of its volunteer editors. The act imposes stringent obligations on platforms like Wikipedia that could compromise their operational integrity. Phil Bradley-Schmieg, the foundation's lead counsel, expressed discontent over having to safeguard editors against what he deems flawed legislation. Legal experts predict further legal challenges to this complex and expansive law, which could affect citizens' freedom of expression and operational viability for small websites.
"It's unfortunate that we must now defend the privacy and safety of Wikipedia's volunteer editors from flawed legislation," noted lead counsel Phil Bradley-Schmieg, highlighting the foundation's serious concerns.
Ben Packer, a partner at law firm Linklaters, emphasized the Online Safety Act's complexity, stating, "As more of it comes into force, we can expect that more challenges may be forthcoming."
