The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has issued a warning about the illegal use of its logo to endorse questionable medicines, devices, and cosmetics. Recent weeks have seen a notable increase in deceptive online content falsely promoting such products as endorsed by HPRA. The authority points out that some 155 Shopify listings and hundreds of fake Facebook profiles are involved in this activity. HPRA emphasizes the potential health risks presented by these unregulated products and advises against purchasing from these sources, urging platforms like Shopify and Meta to take action.
It is urging members of the public not to buy such products online as they are likely to be from untrustworthy suppliers both engaged in illegal advertising and offering fake or unauthorised products that could pose a health risk.
The unacceptable use of the HPRA logo and name in this way is clearly designed to deceive and mislead consumers.
To date, some 155 Shopify product listings, 124 Facebook profiles and 414 Facebook advertisements have been identified making false claims.
The HPRA has advised Shopify and Meta of this fraudulent activity and of the public health risks associated with illegal prescription medicines and other unregulated health products sold online.
