The US judiciary has raised alarms over congressional funding shortfalls that jeopardize federal judges' safety, with a budget $391 million below requested levels. Judges Robert J. Conrad Jr. and Amy J. St. Eve warned Congress in a recent letter that stagnant security funding at $750 million fails to address escalating threats against judges. The judiciary's budget has remained frozen at fiscal year 2023 levels for two years, creating a concerning environment for courthouse security and reflecting a lack of adequate resources to protect court officials amid increasing risks.
"We have significant concerns about our ability to properly secure federal courthouses given current resource levels," Conrad and St. Eve wrote in the April 10 letter.
"Consecutive years of flat security funding comes at a time when threats against federal judges and courthouses are escalating, making this situation unsustainable in the current environment," Conrad and St. Eve wrote in the letter.
