Michael Faulkender was appointed as the acting commissioner of the IRS, marking the third leadership change since tax season started and the fifth under Trump's administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the need for trust in the IRS and expressed confidence in Faulkender's ability to lead. The recent acting commissioner, Gary Shapley, who had a brief tenure, will continue to provide strategic input in reform efforts alongside whistleblower Joseph Ziegler, focusing on meaningful policy changes following their upcoming investigation.
"Trust must be brought back to the IRS, and I am fully confident that Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender is the right man for the moment," Bessent said.
"Gary Shapley's passion and thoughtfulness for approaching ways by which to create durable and lasting reforms at the IRS is essential to our work," Bessent stated.
