The Citizen Lab confirmed that two European journalists, including Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino, were hacked using Paragon spyware linked to a government customer. Initially, Pellegrino was unaware of being targeted until Apple alerted him about a possible spyware attack. This incident marks the first documented case of Paragon spyware infections, deepening the ongoing controversy about spyware misuse by the Italian government. Previous investigations indicated targeted attacks on journalists and NGOs, but a report by Italy's COPASIR committee denied any evidence of espionage against Pellegrino, sparking further scrutiny of their findings.
Until now, there was no evidence that Pellegrino, who works for online news website Fanpage, had been either targeted or hacked with Paragon spyware.
Citizen Lab's new report puts into question COPASIR's conclusions.
