Police Are Using AI Camera Networks to Stalk Women
"According to an analysis by the Institute for Justice, there are already 14 cases across the country where cops are alleged to have abused ALPR access to follow spouses, exes, and even complete strangers."
"The fundamental problem with these systems is that they place private information about people's movements over time in the hands of every officer. Without the constitutional safeguard of a warrant requirement, that predictably allows officers to abuse their access to these systems for things like stalking romantic partners."
Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) are being misused by police officers in the US to stalk romantic partners and others. An analysis revealed 14 cases of abuse, primarily occurring after 2024, coinciding with Flock Safety's expansion into 4,000 cities. Victims often discover the misuse themselves, as internal safeguards fail to prevent such actions. The Milwaukee Police Department saw an officer resign after tracking a partner and their ex multiple times. The lack of warrant requirements raises concerns about privacy and potential abuse of power among officers.
