According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), acts of piracy in global waters have significantly increased in 2025, rising almost 35% compared to the previous year. The most affected area is the Singapore Straits, which reported 27 attacks compared to just seven the previous year. In total, 45 incidents were recorded, with 37 vessels boarded. Crew safety is a major concern, with multiple crew members taken hostage or injured during these attacks, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced maritime security measures.
