Valve has assured users that no Steam passwords or private information were compromised in a recent data leak, clarifying the incident originated from an external SMS service. Initially reported to involve 89 million Steam accounts being sold on the dark web, Valve refuted this claim, affirming that their analysis revealed this was not a breach of Steam's own systems. They cautioned that while phone numbers were leaked, no account-specific information was accessible, and advised users to enhance security by utilizing the Steam Mobile Authenticator for safer logins.
Yesterday we were made aware of reports of leaks of older text messages that had previously been sent to Steam customers. We have examined the leak sample and have determined this was NOT a breach of Steam systems.
The leak consisted of older text messages that included one-time codes that were only valid for 15-minute time frames and that any information related to your Steam account, including which account the phone numbers are tied to, was not leaked.
