Israel's cyber-intelligence unit, Unit 8200, has reportedly utilized Microsoft's cloud service to store vast amounts of intercepted phone calls from Palestinians since 2022. The system collects recordings from Gaza and the occupied West Bank, where it plays a significant role in military operations, including directing air strikes. Many of these calls are stored on Microsoft’s Azure servers in Europe. Despite the retrieved data aiding military actions, Microsoft claims that its CEO was unaware of the operations and has found no evidence of harm resulting from its tools.
The surveillance system, operational since 2022, was built by Unit 8200, the Israeli military's secretive intelligence branch, enabling collection of millions of daily phone calls.
A large amount of intercepted Palestinian data appeared to be stored on Microsoft's Azure servers located in the Netherlands and Ireland, according to leaked documents.
The cloud-based system helped guide deadly air strikes and shaped operations across the occupied Palestinian territories, according to sources from Unit 8200.
Microsoft stated that CEO Satya Nadella was unaware of the nature of the data stored, and no evidence has been found of Azure targeting or harming people.
