Lawsuit: CPCC Hid Info About Public Safety Training Facility, Then Retaliated Against Community
Briefly

The Central Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees is being sued for allegedly violating North Carolina's Open Meetings law in the planning of a controversial training facility. Filed by the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, the lawsuit seeks transparency and accountability after members of the public were denied information about the facility. Although proposed in early 2022, the public became aware of the project's scope only in Fall 2024. The plaintiffs argue their First Amendment rights were violated as they faced retaliation for seeking information.
We showed up at a public institution - the second largest community college in North Carolina - to ask questions about a huge project being planned for our backyard, and instead of answers, we were met with closed doors, silence, and retaliation.
The lawsuit was filed by Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ) on behalf of several North Carolinians seeking information and answers about the construction of the facility.
