Recent reports indicate an increase in U.S. citizens facing detainment and questioning by Customs at South Florida airports, particularly under the Trump administration. Cases include a man from Nicaragua who lost his Global Entry status, a social media influencer who was detained for hours, and a nurse returning from Cuba. These experiences have raised concerns over privacy and treatment, with travelers feeling perplexed by the scrutiny. Many believe this surge in scrutiny reflects broader policy changes during Trump's tenure, impacting citizens regardless of ethnicity or immigration status.
"I think it's because of Trump," said Jorge López Gutiérrez, highlighting how he and other citizens have faced increased scrutiny and questioning at South Florida airports.
"It was white, Black, Latinos, everyone. They don't care if you're a citizen or a non-citizen," Gutiérrez noted, emphasizing the indiscriminate searches by Customs officers.
