Gas prices are high enough. Here's how to avoid getting scammed at the pump by 'card skimmers'
Card skimmers are small devices attached to point-of-sale kiosks that capture debit or credit card information. The FBI reports that card skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year. A joint operation by the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement in Northern California targeted skimmers in Sacramento and Napa counties. Five skimmers were removed from the 510 businesses inspected. To protect payment data, inspect the card swipe area for anything loose, crooked, or damaged that could indicate tampering. Use tap-to-pay when available. When entering a PIN, cover the keypad with a hand to reduce the chance of camera capture.
