AI company deletes the 3 million OKCupid photos it used for facial recognition training
""We're collecting data now and just realized that OkCupid must have a HUGE amount of awesome data for this," Clarifai founder Matthew Zeiler wrote in an email to OkCupid co-founder Maxwell Krohn."
""There has to be some level of trust with tech companies like Clarifai to put powerful technology to good use, and get comfortable with that," Zeiler suggested."
Clarifai deleted 3 million profile photos from OkCupid, following a settlement with the FTC regarding privacy violations. The FTC's investigation began in 2019 after reports revealed Clarifai used OkCupid photos to train its facial recognition technology. Clarifai confirmed to the FTC that it deleted the data and any models trained on it. The company had previously requested the data from OkCupid executives in 2014, which was against OkCupid's privacy policy. The settlement prohibits OkCupid from misrepresenting its data practices.
