Based in Los Angeles, Goapele is gearing up for her first solo show in Oakland, which is particularly meaningful after previous private performances in the area. She feels that Yoshi's provides a unique platform for experimentation in her performances, allowing her to collaborate with special guests. Currently, she is also focused on creating new music that connects with her African roots, reflecting her family's history and influenced by her experiences such as a recent album release. The album features collaborations with Oakland artist Hueman, marking her exploration of music and visual art synergy.
"I feel like at Yoshi's, I kind of stretch out a little bit." Goapele expresses her excitement for her upcoming solo show, emphasizing the freedom and creativity she finds in performing there.
"Half of my family is still in South Africa," says Goapele, noting her connection to the African Diaspora through her music and her father's history as an anti-apartheid activist.
"It just felt very synergistic," recalls Goapele about her collaboration with artist Hueman, highlighting her journey to incorporate visual art into her musical expression.
Goapele reveals she's working on songs more connected to the African Diaspora and hints at new music influenced by her South African heritage.
